“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”
Proverbs 17:17

Serving in ministry, whether vocationally or otherwise, is a wonderful privilege given to us by God (Eph 4:11-13). We are called into a spiritual, eternal family and built up in the strength of God (1 Pet 2:4-5). We sow, and God gives the increase (1 Cor 3:7).
Serving in ministry also wears heavy on the soul, even on the mind and body. Otherwise, we would not need encouragements like, “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up” (Gal 6:9). How do we not grow weary? One of the greatest means of refreshment and perseverance in ministry is true, spiritual friendships.
Faithful friendships have been referred to as “the forgotten piece in a persevering ministry.” We cannot care well for others if we are neglecting our own souls. Self-care, when considered biblically, means recognizing limitations (2 Cor 12:9-10), taking time to rest (Lk 5:16), and providing for your own needs to provide for others (Phil 2:4).
Friendships take time and energy, yet investing in them yields much fruit. Often just being together with a true friend—listening, being heard, or being silent—brings perspective and refreshment to life’s troubles. Sometimes not even discussing ministry-related topics provides a restful place to recalibrate to God's desires for our identity and priorities.
Friendship “halves our troubles and doubles our joy.” Meaningful friendships even revive other relationships in our lives. Find friendships and receive refreshment from others in ministry through our Practical Ministry Fellowships.
